Anyone fancy a plate of my leftover curried goat? Leftoverswap in the USA and shareyourmeal in the Netherlands both offer subscribers a chance to swap leftovers. Now I think that's a really good idea and they cover the UK too, linking you up with people who have food to share. But look at their map - there's a big empty space devoid of sharers in East Anglia!
Today I made rice pudding because I had loads of milk to use up and it seemed cold enough outside to consider a winter pudding. It's so easy and with semi skimmed milk a low fat dessert. Try adding a bay leaf for a change, it works very well.
Why are the British embarrassed about asking for a Doggy Bag at a restaurant? Why do we still pretend that we are taking the leftover food home for the dog?
Tonight I made Pakora with a bag of out of date spinach which was just begining to wilt. Use any vegetables that you have shrivelling in the bottom of the fridge. Just cut the vegetables into slices, or shred according to their density. Remember that courgettes will cook a lot quicker than chunks of carrot. I have yet to find anyone who doesn't wolf down a plate of these delicious Indian snacks. Gram or Chickpea flour is easy to find, usually with gluten free products on the supermarket shelf, from wholefood shops or anywhere 'ethnic'.
Leftover French bread turned into a pizza for lunch today. Did you know that if you run a stale baguette under the cold tap for a second and then place it in a hot oven for 5 or 10 minutes it's nearly as good as new?

Today for Zero Waste Week I used up all the leftover pieces of cheese in my fridge. I made Potted Cheese. It's the perfect recipe to use any type of stale cheese and is delicious on toast or with baked potatoes. It keeps for a week in the fridge. And don't throw away the milk can, wash it out and keep it to bake a mini fruit cake at Christmas.

Zero Waste Week Day One. I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts
Written by RuthThis week is Zero Waste Week and we are being encouraged to reduce food waste, use up leftovers, resist BOGOF offers, reduce portion size and DON'T WASTE FOOD. So to my surprise, my daughter returned from Jamie Oliver's Feastival today with a car load of green coconuts that had been dumped by one of the food traders. We have got over two litres of coconut water and that was just one box. And there were ten of them...
In a city said to have more restaurants per head of population than anywhere in the UK, there is no shortage of foodies. This year at the Edinburgh Festival there are events about the history of dieting, the challenge of food security and how to forage for wild food. One science-based event on sensory dining brings together a scent technician, a linguist, a chemist and a neuroscientist to look at how tweaking our various senses affects our experience of food. It will take the form of a sit-down meal with each of the five courses exploring one of our senses. Food for Thought, a theatre collective, will perform music and drama with their menu 'Dinner is Swerved' at the Edinburgh Fringe from August 3rd - 25th and it's sold out! Let's see if we can get them to come to Suffolk...

We have been asked to give this a mention, so here it is. This is the first food and drink festival of its kind to be held at Henham Park Nr Southwold, in the lovely setting of the historic walled garden. Over the two days of the Festival, the aim is to celebrate and publicise the amazing variety of food and drink available in East Anglia. Local, regional and national firms will exhibit and there will be a special children’s activity area. Cookery demonstrations and talks will be held throughout both days and those purchasing food will be able to store their shopping in a chilled store. Next weekend starts a full programme of foodie stuff at the Aldeburgh Festival of Food and Drink, 23rd September to 8th October, including a competition to find Suffolk’s best amateur baker. Adult Classes include ‘Victoria Sandwich’, ‘Fruitcake’, ‘Scones’ and ‘Cupcakes’, with a ‘Best Junior Cake Maker’ class for 10-16 year olds.
Yesterday we headed off to the community event held by USAF Lakenheath to celebrate July 4th. They sure know how to hold an event and cook for the thousands of visitors attending. Not a commercial food outlet in sight, but an amazing selection of foods prepared to raise funds for the various organisations that exist on the base. We ate corn dogs, hot and spicy chicken wings with carrot and celery sticks, smoked brisket with fried pickles, kebab combo of chicken and beef kebabs with corn on the cob and funnel cake with cinnamon sugar. These guys pictured made us chicken fajitas with sour cream and tomato salsa. It was a great family day out with an amazing firework finale. The food just kept on coming, ooh, and yes, there was Aspalls cider in the beer tent.
